Public Safety Director

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for directing the city’s public safety operations.
MAJOR DUTIES
 Responds to complex fire, police calls and other emergency calls
 Prepares annual department budgets and controls the expenditure of departmental funds
 Develops and implements department policies and procedures
 Develops and implements community and crime prevention programs
 Attends meetings and public gatherings to explain the activities and functions of the department
 Supervises and participates in the training of department personnel
 Trains, assigns, directs, supervises, evaluates and disciplines personnel
 Develops and implements department long and short term plans
 Enforces department policies and procedures
 Directs the maintenance of department vehicles and equipment
 Resolves citizen questions, complaints and concerns.
 Attends City Council meetings
 Attends professional conferences
 Review and approve reports
 Performs related duties

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

 The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing,
stooping. The employee frequently lifts light objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of
dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
 The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. Work
requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves and of specialized law enforcement
equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 Master’s degree or equivalent experience.
 Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the
division/department in order to direct and coordinate work within the division/department, usually interpreted
to require three to five years of related experience.
 Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of
vehicle or equipment operated.
 Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Police Standards and Training Council for the State of
Georgia.
 Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the Georgia
Firefighter Standards and Training Act.
 Must be POST certified or obtain certification within 4 months of employment.
